Jake, Bryan, and Greg ran out of the woods and onto the road next to where they had parked the truck earlier. On down the hill, in the direction the infected had originally come running from, gunfire continued. Jake remembered from the map that there was walled garden down at the bottom of the property.

“You think they’re in the garden?” Bryan said.

“I do. Let’s go. But no flashlights.”

Jake turned his off, and Bryan did the same. They followed the sound of the gunfire until they could see some muzzle flashes at the bottom of the hill. A bolt of lightning crawled across the sky and lit the yard just long enough for them to see the large square walls that surrounded the garden.

“The garden,” Bryan said as he ran.

The gunfire continued, but there was something odd to Jake about the cadence of it. He had been in enough standoffs with enemy gunman to know a gunfight when he heard one. And that was exactly what the back and forth of these shots sounded like. A few would come from one end of the garden, then Jake would hear and see the muzzle flashes at the other end.

“Colt, if you can hear me, you need to let me know your situation. We are almost to you now.”

Jake didn’t even hear so much as static. Colt must have lost his earpiece somewhere along the way. They had about another football field length to cover before they reached the garden. The gun he’d been able to see a moment ago sounded like it was still firing, but he could no longer see the flashes.

Jake slowed to a fast walk with about fifty yards to go. “Okay, stay behind me. Keep your head on a swivel once we get to the garden. They’ll have walls to hide behind, and as we’ve learned, they’re smart enough to use them.”

Jake didn’t wait for confirmation, he just moved forward. He did his best to scour the open field around the outside of the walls, but it was too dark to really see anything else. As he approached the wall, about twenty yards away, he was almost knocked off of his feet by the stench. So much so that he stopped, right in the middle of the field, and Bryan nearly ran over him. He covered his mouth to keep the sound of himself gagging from being so loud that the infected could hear him.

He tried to comprehend how the smell could be so strong. He was standing right behind ten or more of the infected just a few minutes ago on the mountain, and the stench wasn’t even close to that powerful. But there, without even one of them in sight, it was practically debilitating. His eyes were watering, and he could hear Bryan and Greg choking on it right beside him. It did not make sense.

“Jake!” he heard his brother squawk in on the radio at his hip. “Don’t go near that garden! It’s a trap.
